According to the National Institute of Justice, nearly 45% of recently released inmates reoffend and return to prison before the end of their first year out. Additionally, more than 155,000 Americans die every year from a drug overdose or an alcohol-related situation. That means that someone dies every 3 1/2 minutes from substance abuse.
Substance abuse often leads to homelessness, unemployment, financial instability, loss of support from family and friends, depression, anxiety, and even thoughts of suicide. All these things can in turn lead to further substance abuse to cope creating a never-ending cycle.
Homelessness, substance abuse, and re-entry to society after prison are huge issues among men in the Midlands. When men are faced with coming out of substance abuse and addiction or reentering society after a prison sentence, they are looking for stability and hope for the future, but don’t know where to start. At Providence Home, our goal is to offer that place to start, with structure, accountability, and the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to change lives. No matter how dark the past is, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow!
